Walpole Hiroshima-Nagasaki Remembrance

Walpole Common near the Gazebo, along Main and Elm Streets
The Walpole Peace and Justice Group will hold a peace vigil on Friday, August 7, 2026 from 5:00 to 6:00 PM remembering the horrific atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and calling for the elimination of nuclear weapons. The Iranian and Ukraine wars have increased the threat of the use of nuclear weapons. We call for the abolition of nuclear weapons and for the U.S. to join the International Treaty for the Prohibition of nuclear weapons. We will be remembering the lives lost and altered forever on August 6 and 9, 1945. We will observe a moment of silence and read poems and personal reflections.
We will have banners and signs. We will be standing on the sidewalks along the Walpole Common near the Gazebo, along Main and Elm Streets. As a peace group, WPJG is committed to non-violence in all we do. At vigils, we remind people to stand peacefully, never respond to anyone who makes negative comments, appears angry or hostile, and to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation.
